Raj Bhattacharya is a passionate and committed defence barrister. He is very experienced in criminal law, having practiced since 2007.

Before being called to the Bar, he was a Senior Criminal Lawyer at the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, where he ran numerous indictable criminal matters including matters in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal. He has also been employed at Victoria Legal Aid and at a generalist practice in Warrnambool. 

In the course of his career, he has primarily practiced as a solicitor-advocate and has appeared succesfully in a number of different jurisdictions, including:

  • the Magistrates' Court, where he ran contested hearings in both the criminal and civil jurisdictions
  • the Coroner's Court
  • the County Court, for pleas and appeals
  • the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal
  • the Children's Court (both Family and Criminal Divisions)

He has had significant experience appearing at courts all over regional Victoria and is available to take briefs outside Melbourne.
